Have you ever felt that your skills and talent are not being recognized just because of your skin color? As a black person, it is not unusual to experience discrimination and prejudice in various aspects of life. Whether it is in education, workplace, or social settings, the bias against us can have a significant impact on our opportunities and wellbeing.

That is why it is essential to have a fair and equal chance to showcase our abilities and potential, especially in fields such as law, where intelligence and critical thinking are highly valued. However, the reality is that even the process of getting an interview can be clouded by racial prejudices.

A recent data I came across showed the struggles that black law students face during the interview process in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), a prominent institution in Malaysia. The data revealed that one student had to face offensive and unrelated questions about his ethnicity, while another student was assumed to have low grades because of his skin color.

This is unacceptable and reflects the underlying racism that still exists in our society. It is discouraging to know that our merit and effort are often overshadowed by external factors that we have no control over. As black people, we need to demand fairness and equal treatment in all aspects of life, including education, career, and everyday interactions.

It is important to raise awareness and challenge stereotypes that limit our potential and opportunities. We must also support and empower each other and create our networks to provide mentorship and guidance to future generations of black leaders in law and other fields.

We must remind ourselves and others that our skin color does not define our intelligence, skills, or worth in society. We are capable and deserving of success and recognition, and it is time for the world to recognize our brilliance and contribution to the community.

Let us continue to strive for a world where racial discrimination is eradicated, and everyone is given a fair and equal chance to succeed. Together, we can break the barriers and build a better future for ourselves and future generations.
